INDEPENDENT CATTLEMEN ATTEND PROPERTY TAX MEETING
(Hyannis, Neb.) - Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska President Chris
Abbott and Directors Jim Hanna and Dave Wright attended an informational
meeting held in Brewster, NE on Fri, Jan 13th, concerning the growing
burden of property taxes on independent landowners across the state.
Over 70 people representing 16 counties were present at the meeting
which was moderated by Dennis Drayton of Ainsworth, NE.
Problems with the current taxation structure were analyzed and ideas
and suggestions were exchanged throughout the duration of the five hour
meeting. The solutions discussed ranged from productive tax approaches
to taxes on the consumption side of the equation. The initiated referendum
to amend the South Dakota Constitution, "Stabilize Tax on Property,"
which would base the taxation rate on the purchase price rather than
on market value, with a 3% increase limitation per year, was also brought
up.
A coalition coordinating committee with one member from each of the
counties represented, will hammer-out a strategy, with plans to meet
again with the entire group in Brewster in late February or early March.
Director Dave Wright said "It was a worthwhile two hour drive to
attend today's meeting because of all of the concerned input and subsequent
unification toward a common goal."
